My name is Alex Wiggs ET2/SS and I served on the USS Henry Clay from
about 1980 to 1982. Ship mates I can remember are QM Shackelford, ET
Chris Gilbertson, Mr Green, COB Russel and ET David White. Drop me an
email if you remember me. It was fun, but it wasn't real fun......LOL.

Was surfing and came across your page. I served as executive officer on USS
Henry Clay (Blue) from 1972-1975 when she was making patrols out of Guam,
and stayed on after her last Guam patrol to help a brand new skipper get her
back to NWS Keyport for weapons offload prior to east coast overhaul.  Henry
Clay was my fourth submarine (13 Polaris patrols and 4 special ops) and 5th
consecutive sea duty assignment. I finally came ashore after 14 years sea
duty to the delight of Joyce and children.  I served my next 2 tours first
at CINCPACFLT, and then at NAVSUBTRACENPAC in the period 1975 -1981.  I
retired 30 June 1981 after 20 years and 20 days active duty.

Subject: SHIPS BELL< USS HENRY CLAY

Hello,

This may sound odd, or may not. I don't know if  Submarines have ships
bells, or especially if the USS Henry Clay did.

A very  close friend of mine has had a bell, that I am pretty sure is brass
as I sat and  polished it for about an hour, and the thing must weigh about 75
pounds, hanging  in her restaurant. Well, the restaurant closed after 31 years
of business, so I  had the pleasure of removing this bell from the wall.

It was pretty dirty from  all the years of neglect, but the name USS HENRY
CLAY is very nicely engraved on  it.  I wonder if it is the real deal. If anyone
has intimate knowledge of the bell, as in had to polish it as part of their duties,
or recalls any small details about it, I would love to know.

She will most likely be selling the bell and I wanted to make sure that those
who served aboard the ship would have a crack at picking it up for themselves.
She is planning to have it appraised I believe.

If anyone has any details or interest please email me. I am pretty
curious now about its history. I do wish to say thank you to all those who have
served in our nations Military, it is because of you all that our country is
free today. Thank you all,

Mike Taylor
